Recycling Electronics is the Safest Form of Disposal

A summary of how I.T. hardware, electrical equipment and machinery are recycled.

Regrettably nothing lasts for ever and eventually the time will come to retire your old computers, or scrap your obsolete electrical hardware.  Everyone knows that all ewaste, especially I.T. hardware, has to be disposed of by a State approved recycler. When it comes to choosing who to use, what really differentiates one recycler from another?  Many might look to the cost or level of service as important factors, but when it comes to recycling it’s actually about efficiencies in materials reclamation.  In some cases the Newtech Corporate Recycling process has resulted in as much as 98% of the materials used in an old item being reclaimed for re-use in manufacturing new items.  After all, isn’t that the real goal of recycling?

Recycling Facility

Managing the flow of ewaste through the recycling center

When waste electronics arrive at the recycling facility they are firstly identified and recorded as accepted.  This process is designed as a secondary confirmation that the ewaste collected from the clients location has arrived and is consistent with the clients’ manifest of items scheduled for disposal.

After a quick inspection to ensure there are no hazardous items (e.g. broken glass or dangerously positioned items on a pallet) the ewaste is sorted into their product classifications.  For example, computer monitors are moved to an isle devoted to PC screens, whilst printers are moved to an area dedicated to old photocopiers, office printers and fax machines.  The Newtech Corporate Recycling Facility has an isle for every type of office or business electronic, with the exception of cell and iPhones, tablets, PC’s, laptops, servers or any other device that may contain sensitive data.  Instead of being stored in isles, this hardware is stored in a secure, data destruction area, where the hard drives will be removed, purged, wiped, destroyed with an EMP and then shredded beyond recovery.

Once an item has been allotted a storage area it will then be allocated a disassembly line number.  Shortly after this the demanufacturing process will begin.

Demanufacturing Ewaste

Disassembly of electrical equipment and obsolete IT hardware

The term demanufacturing, is a common expression within the ewaste industry. It is used to refer to the reverse process of manufacturing.  In its simplest term the word demanufacturing means little more than disassembling an old electrical device or machine into its smallest components.

Most electrical equipment, machinery, IT hardware and computers can be disassembled very quickly just a few power tools, providing the disassembler actually knows how.   The Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling team are usually recruited because they have production line manufacturing skills.  This skill set comes in extremely handy in understanding the modern manufacturing techniques and fastening systems used in electronics.

Knowledge of engineering techniques and fastening structures make it possible to disassemble hardware quickly and effectively.   These ‘ewaste demanufacturing’ skills are coupled with decades of experience, which have resulted in creating an unsurpassable class of American recycling engineers.

Sorting Components via Material Groups

Organizing components of ewaste into materials

The demanufacturing process results in separating hardware into its components but each component can consist of many different materials.  A great example is the fan component of a desktop computer; the fan consists of blades which are plastic, an alloy motor housing, and various metals, including coper wire.  It’s too timely and expensive to demanufacture this type of component, so instead each component is sorted into groups for the next level of separation.  Thankfully, not all components have this problem, for example aluminium and plastic casings just need to be sorted into their material group and crushed into bails that are then ready to be recycled.

The opposite picture shows a Birdseye view of the sorting area at the recycling center in New Jersey.  As you can see from the photograph there are many large, chest height boxes, each box contains a particular component of ewaste.  For example there will be boxes filled with wires, motherboards, plastic blocks and so on.  When full, each one of these boxes will be moved to the next process of component materials separation.

CRT Disposal

Specialized Recycling Equipment

Reclaiming materials from small or complex components

One of the largest and most notorious problems faced by the recycling community has been the disposal of old CRT monitors.  We’ve all seen news reports of children in Africa or Asia picking their way through the broken glass of CRT dumping grounds.  Obviously, using the 3rd world to dump our trash IT hardware is no solution and doesn’t really qualify for the recycling badge of honour.

Thankfully, Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling has made the investment into technology that ensures that never happens.  Pictured opposite is one of the many “specialized recycling machines” owned by Newtech that helps to process ewaste properly.  In this case the machine opposite is especially designed to help recycle CRT monitors (sometimes call tubes).

There are now so many advances in recycling technology that it’s become possible to extract nearly all the materials held in the smallest of components.  It goes without saying that there are costs associated with recycling.  Obviously it costs money to develop, build and deploy the technology needed to save our planet. The small recycling fees paid by Newtech clients to utilize these technologies are soon offset against the benefits resulting from protecting the global environment from irreversible damage.

Refining Materials for Reuse

The recycling industries role in manufacturing

When you pay to have your offices old PC recycled or your electrical machinery disposed of, your sending that particular item on a journey that’s really quite astonishing.  Just about every scrap of material used in your old works computer (for example) can be reclaimed for use in a totally new product.  In the space of just a few months the keyboard, mouse, computer monitor and desktop you were working on could be transformed into the next new phone, the new dashboard in your car or even a new computer at work.

Materials such as glass are 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity.  There is also no limit on the number of times aluminium can be recycled. Metals like steel and copper are recycling devotees. Their properties hold steady no matter how many times they are melted down. Copper recycling has been common since it began in ancient times, and a large amount of all copper ever mined is still in use somewhere today. Today's discarded ewaste can be in new items in as little as 60 days. Modern electric arc furnaces can melt steel scrap into new steel in less than an hour.

Recycling isn’t just done because it is legally required, most Newtech clients do it because they can, and they want too.  Call today and have your ewaste recycled: 732.564.3110.

FAQ’s About Ewaste Disposal and Electronics Recycling

HOW DO YOU GET RID OF OLD OFFICE SERVERS & NETWORK HARDWARE?

Regardless of whether an old office server is working or not, if it is scheduled for the trash it has to be disposed of correctly.  There are two main considerations; the first is that there should be no recoverable data on the hard drive or in the memory.  Before you start hammering nails through the hard disk, don’t worry, the data destruction team specialize in HDD wipes and shredding. The second consideration is that like all computers, printers, copiers and monitors, a server will need to be recycled, so please call to have it picked up and do not throw it out with the regular trash.

IS OFFICE JUNK REMOVAL FREE?

Office junk such as obsolete or broken PC’s, workstations, old laptops and other computers, printers, copiers, old fax machines and monitor do not really carry a high scrap value.  In fact it usually costs more to demanufacture ewaste than can be made from the reclamation of materials. That said, the main reason for collecting and recycling ewaste isn’t to reclaim a scrap value, it’s to ensure these products stay out of landfill sites.  Most office junk, especially the I.T. hardware is classified as toxic waste and if your firm is caught throwing its ewaste into the trash the State will prosecute.

WHO COLLECTS OLD BROKEN ELECTRICAL MACHINERY?

The ‘Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling and Ewaste Collection Service’ usually consists of a team of three; however this number can change depending on the type of machinery or equipment being picked up.  The visitor to this page should note that this service is not a standard trash collection service, is for the collection and disposal of electronics considered too be ewaste.  For a full list of electrical equipment that Newtech removes and recycles please click here.

CAN WE DUMP OUR OFFICE PRINTERS IN THE GARBAGE DUMPSTER?

Most companies today know that they can’t dump their office PC’s in the trash can or dumpster, however, many are still unsure about printers, copiers and even phones.  It is safest to assume that anything with a plug on the end of it, in your office or business environment needs to be disposed of by an accredited ewaste recycler.

IS THERE A SPECIAL TRASH COLLECTION FOR OFFICE IT HARDWARE, COMPUTERS AND PC’S?

There is a special trash collection service for old, obsolete and even broken IT hardware and PC’s.  This is because unlike most electrical machinery computer hardware and even copiers can contain data that may infringe on the strict data protection laws.  ‘Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling and Ewaste Collection Service’ provide a complete solution that manages not just the secure collection of data sensitive hardware but also permanent data deletion of any files or information held on those computers.

WHO TO CALL FOR TRASH COLLECTION OF OLD OFFICE IT AND PHONE EQUIPMENT?

If you want to speak to someone about arranging a pickup dial the sales team on: 732.564.3110.  If you have already arranged a collection and have a question please call the support team on: 732.564.3110.

WHAT ELECTRONIC MACHINERY NEEDS TO BE COLLECTED & RECYCLED BY LAW?

The question of what electronic equipment and IT hardware needs to be recycled is the most common.  To help please see the above list of the most commonly recycled electronics.  If your business has something that is not on the above list and you are not sure please call today for help.
