Keeping Electronic Waste Out Of Landfill Sites

Aiming for a policy of "zero recyclable ewaste to landfill" is achievable.

The goal of sending zero ewaste to landfill sites was once considered an environmental dream, now it has become a business reality. Most of the ewaste sent to landfills is recyclable; the only issue has been the cost of recycling old materials verses the cost of mining and refining new. Serious investments into recycling technologies have now made it possible to make materials renewability a sustainable economic practice. The world has taken a giant step forward. This is thanks mainly to changes in the laws that effect how businesses get rid of their electronic waste. Consensus between business leaders and IT directors about sound ecological business practices have led to these new laws and thankfully, a zero electronic waste to landfill reality.

The Reality of Electronics Disposal

Why electrical devices, hardware & equipment can’t be dumped in landfills.

Other than the remote chance of electrocution most electrical equipment, computers and machinery is harmless when it’s in use. The problems start occurring when electronics are no longer in service and end up discarded. Right up until recently, electronics in their ‘tens of millions’ were being dumped with the office trash and other such dumpster garbage. 99% of the time this discarded electronic waste would find its way to a landfill site somewhere in the county or State and end up just being buried. Apart from this huge waste of recyclable materials, a problem, deadly in nature, soon started to emerge. Traces of toxic elements started to appear. It transpired that cathode ray tubes (used in computer monitors, ATM, video cameras, and more) contained toxic levels of, phosphor, lead, barium and other heavy metals which were leaching into the ground water. Furthermore, printed circuit boards which appear in most electronics were discharging rivers of tin, lead, brominated dioxin, beryllium cadmium, and the deadly element MERCURY. Plastics from printers, keyboards, monitors, etc. produced brominated dioxins and hydrocarbons. Even computer wires and cables had damaging effects on the environment. All of these deadly compounds and elements were classified on the periodic table as items requiring specialized toxic waste disposal. Yet somehow these poisons had worked their way from the offices, the warehouses and plants of each State into our soil and water.

Pushing for Cleaner Disposal of Electronics

Electronics disposal laws & corporate social responsibility credentials.

Prior to changes in electronic waste laws, it was completely baffling as to why the manufacturers or tax funded refuse management organizations had not taken steps towards safer electronic waste disposal. Clean methods of ewaste disposal such as recycling were expensive if done correctly and questions of who should foot the bill arose. Thankfully, through much needed EPA pressure and a strong willed business community, who were set on “zero waste to landfill” policies, things started to look less like an environmental disaster and more like an eco-friendly dream! Now-a-days, with a little financial help from the business community, who are more than willing to pay to have their electronic waste managed correctly, laws have been changed and it’s become illegal to dump electronics equipment of any type with the regular trash. The corporate world refers to this change from using landfills to recycling as “Mission Zero”. The first step towards zero is a thorough audit of current business waste streams; not just the amount, but also origin and composition. The US Environmental Protection Agency provides free tools for this process and in conjunction Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling offers a full complement of ewaste management and recycling services.  Take the first step today and call Newtech or if you would like to learn more about the costs of collecting your ewaste then click here and fill out the form for an online quote.

What is the Choice When Disposing of a Business’s Electronics?

Reducing an organization's footprint in waste electronics.

Before looking at the electronics disposal choices it is vitally important you understand the laws and the environmental consequences of failing to manage electronic waste correctly. From a legal stand point, disposal of IT hardware and electronics containing information may be subject to data protection laws. Some companies have been fined millions for failing to dispose of computers and even photocopiers that have held client or staff data. This problem can be avoided by simply talking to the data destruction team at Newtech, worse case they’ll be able to advise you, best case you’ll have them destroy your hard-drives (see hard drive destruction service). From an environmental aspect; all business owners and managers need to be aware that dumping electronics in dumpsters, with the trash or even using a company that’s not authorized will result in hefty fines and even imprisonment. Don’t worry, Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling is State authorised to manage electronic waste and is able to process everything, from a keyboard and mouse to large server banks, electrical hardware and just about any business equipment with a plug. The choice is simple, if we don’t manage our waste electronics, they will waste us. If you make the wrong choice, you’re looking at some rather grime scenarios. On the other hand, if your business is serious about reducing its electronic waste footprint then the team at Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling are able, and very willing to help you.

Recycling Electronic Waste

Keeping electronics out of landfill sites through recycling processes.

When you pay to have your offices old PC recycled or your electrical machinery disposed of, your sending that particular item on a journey that’s really quite astonishing.  Just about every scrap of material used in your old works computer (for example) can be reclaimed for use in a totally new product.  In the space of just a few months the keyboard, mouse, computer monitor and desktop you were working on could be transformed into the next new phone, the new dashboard in your next car or even a new computer at work.  Materials such as glass are 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity.  There is also no limit on the number of times aluminium can be recycled. Metals like steel and copper are recycling devotees. Their properties hold steady no matter how many times they are melted down. Copper recycling has been common since it began in ancient times, and a large amount of all copper ever mined is still in use somewhere today. Today's discarded ewaste can be in new items in as little as 60 days. Modern electric arc furnaces can melt steel scrap into new steel in less than an hour.  Recycling isn’t just done because it is legally required, most Newtech clients do it because they can, and they want too.

The Success of Corporate Electronics Recycling

Sending a zero amount of electronic waste to the landfill sounds like a nice idea but how achievable is it for a big business? In fairness it’s already been achieved, in fact even as far back as 2013, ten out of Honda's fourteen North American plants, and eighty one of General Motors' manufacturing plants had already achieved the label of zero waste. Proper electronic waste management is starting to look like a business priority and not just because the boss doesn’t want to be fined or because a company wants good PR. Simply put, employees don’t want to work for eco destroying monsters, consumers don’t want to buy from irresponsible businesses, bosses and shareholders don’t want to see the environment destroyed. In reality the idea of a healthy sustainable consumer driven economy is an incredibly appealing actuality that most people want to help happen.

There are still many technical and political issues that recyclers are working towards solving before the efficiency and economics of electronics disposal can be fully realised. That said, in some cases it’s now possible to recycle 100% of some products. It’s commonly known that steel (for example) is the most recycled material on the planet, more than all other materials combined. Providing the backing of the business community is there to support the recycling industry and the technical minds develop even better ways to recycle, then who knows what will be achievable in our lifetime. One thing is for sure, the future is already looking greener.

Electronic Waste Disposal & Waste Electronics Recycling FAQ’s

HOW DO YOU GET RID OF OLD OFFICE SERVERS & NETWORK ELECTRONICS?

If your old electronics and IT hardware is scheduled for the trash it has to be disposed of correctly. There are two main considerations to think of when disposing of electronics such as servers; the first is that there should be no recoverable data on the hard drives or in the RAM. That said, before you start hammering nails through the hard disk, don’t worry, the Newtech data destruction team specialize in HDD wipes and shredding. The second consideration is based about the actual disposal of the electronics.  All electronics; including computers, printers, copiers and monitors, will need to be recycled, so please call to have your hardware picked up and do not throw your waste electronics out with the regular trash.

OFFICE ELECTRONICS - IS IT FREE TO HAVE JUNK ELECTRONICS REMOVED?

Junk electronic waste resulting from obsolete or broken PC’s, workstations, old laptops and other such electronically powered equipment, do not really carry a high scrap value. In fact it usually costs the recycler more to demanufacture this type of electronic waste than can be recuperated from the reclamation of materials.  As electronics recycling technology evolves there might be more profitable ways of reclaiming materials.  However, for now the main aim behind collecting and recycling electronic waste isn’t to profit massively through reclaimed scrap value, it’s actually to ensure these products stay out of landfill sites.

WHO CAN COLLECT OLD ELECTRONIC WASTE?

You should not just allow anyone to take away your electronic waste because legally the responsibility resides with you.  Failure to have a State certified recycler dispose of your electronic waste will result in prosecution.  The ‘Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling and Electronic Waste Collection Service’   is part of the State approved Newtech Recycling support package.  However, this service is only available to the business community.  This is not a standard trash collection service; it is exclusively for the collection and disposal of electronics waste.

CAN WE DUMP ANY ELECTRONIC WASTE IN THE GARBAGE DUMPSTER?

Most companies today know that they can’t dump their office PC’s in the trash-can or dumpster, however, many are still unsure about printers, copiers and even phones. It is safest to assume that anything with a plug on the end of it, in your office or business environment needs to be disposed of by an accredited ewaste recycler.  For a full list of electrical equipment that Newtech removes and recycles please CLICK HERE

IS THERE A SPECIAL ELECTRONICS WASTE COLLECTION FOR OFFICE IT HARDWARE, COMPUTERS AND PC’S?

There is a special electronics waste collection service for old, obsolete and even broken IT hardware and PC’s. This is because unlike most electrical machinery computer hardware and even copiers can contain data that may infringe on the strict data protection laws. ‘Newtech Corporate Electronics Recycling and Ewaste Collection Service’ provide a complete solution that manages not just the secure collection of data sensitive hardware but also permanent data deletion of any files or information held on those computers.

WHO TO CALL FOR TRASH COLLECTION OF OLD OFFICE IT AND PHONE ELECTRONIC WASTE?

If you want to speak to someone about arranging a pickup dial the sales team on: 732.564.3110. If you have already arranged a collection and have a question please call the support team on: 732.564.3110.

WHAT ELECTRONIC WASTE (EWASTE) NEEDS TO BE COLLECTED & RECYCLED BY LAW?

The question of what electronic waste and unwanted IT hardware needs to be recycled is the most common. To help please see the above list of the most commonly recycled electronics. If your business has something that is not on the above list and you are not sure please call today for help.  9 times out of 10 the Newtech Corporate Electronics Waste Management facility in New Jersey will be able to manage it.
